Stardust Canister Returns To EarthUtah ScienceDUGWAY PROVING GROUND Utah January 16, 2006 - Nasa announced today that the Stardust space capsule returned to earth safely. The space ship was in flight for 7 years, and landed on Sunday at the Dugway Proving Ground. The capsule was seen returning to earth in many places in the western United States. During it's 7 year journey, the space capsule captured dust from the Wild 2 comet in 2004. The core of the spacecraft was a tennis racket sized collector using an aerogel to capture the samples. The capsule bounced on soft mud at the Dugway proving range. It had only a small chip to it's protective heat shield. It's parachute was deployed at 100,000 feet. When the capsule landed, it was travelling about 10 mph. Eventually, the team handling the returned space dust will give the public the chance to help in identifying the telltale tracks produced when space dust was captured in the aerogel. The capsule was launched in an effort to capture comet and intersteller dust particles. Scientists believe that these particles will help them learn about the formation of the solar system, an alleged 4.5 billion years ago. NASA sent another probe called Deep Impact into the path of another comet. There was a high-speed collission with comet Tempel 1. A Russian psychic tried to sue NASA over the impact.
